A fun weekend of sports here are some of the things on my mind.
Congrats to the Navy Midshipmen on a great win this weekend in the Annual Army Navy Game. The Black Knights did all they could do but came up short once again. I had the honor of watching the game with at a local gathering of West Point and Annapolis grads in the Tampa Bay Area. It was very inspiring watching these former Cadets and Mids watch the game with the passion of schoolboys, while at the same time measuring their excitement with an overwhelming sense of honor for their bitter rivals. Both have Beat Army/Beat Navy baked into their DNA as plebes, yet at the moment of truth with the game on the line the respect they had for each other was palpable. And when the Navy Midshipmen were able to raise their hands in victory, the Mids I was with, also raised their hands, but to console their rivals on their loss more then fist pumping their fists in celebration. It was quite a sight to see.
The Warriors finally lost and it was the best thing that could have ever happened to them. The W’s are the class of the NBA and can be a dynasty. The NBA has such a huge playoff field that making the postseason is less of a grind for most teams that are going to play for the trophy. The hoops season is very long and grueling. We now see teams sitting stars during the year giving games away in the loss column in exchange for fresher players down the stretch. The Warriors streak was taking on a life of its own and becoming as big as the team. By having the streak snapped it took the focus off what they don’t give away rings and trophies for, the streak, and what the real prize is back-to-back NBA titles.
The NFL season is coming to the silly season of guessing what teams will make the playoffs. If this team wins and this team loses and another team’s bus gets lost then another team will make the post season. This season the league has some of the worst records I can remember with more than half the teams with losing records. Two divisions don’t have a team with a WINNING RECORD, are you kidding me. The NFL wants every team to have a chance to make the playoffs. But by watering down the teams instead of building everyone up to be a champion, it looks like everyone has fallen with a few rich teams at the top and everyone else under 500.
The Heisman Trophy was awarded this weekend. Congrats to Alabama’s Derrick Henry. It was great watching the reaction from his family. It was great for all his coaches and teammates. Hats off to the Crimson Tide players, coaches and fans. ROOOOOOOLLLLLLLLL TIDE. As for the Heisman Trust talk to the hand, because I stand by what have written and said on the radio, you have severely damaged what the award is all about, so shame on you.
