Very interesting weekend in MLB we just finished up.
The Yankees announced that CC Sabathia will be out for six weeks with cartilage damage his knee. The Yankees have already lost Ivan Nova for the season with Tommy John surgery, and now will have Sabathia out for a while. Oh did I mention Micheal Pineda has shoulder issues. The Rays have been the team that most experts have been talking about with their injuries in their rotation. Now I’ll have to look at the Yankees as the team with the worst arm issues in the AL East. The Yankees came in to the season with question marks in their bullpen. Now add three different starters on the shelf, that is going to put even more pressure on the Yankees bullpen to eat up more innings. I am going to keep an eye to see if the Yanks bullpen will become over worked and over used while trying to pick up a rotation that is 3 hurlers short. You can have a great pen, but with out starters going deep into games it just doesn’t matter.
This season is nuts with all the injuries we have had. Now The White Sox will be with out the new slugger Jose Abreu for at least 15 days with an ankle injury. In April he won both the AL player of the month and the Al Rookie of the month. The first time it has ever been done. I hope he gets well soon because it has been so much fun to watch him crush baseballs this season.
By the way did everyone see Albert Pujols take David Price deep on Sunday. Wow as much as we have written him off with the substandard years and injuries since leaving St Louis. We sometimes forget that he was a three-time MVP, and that he has now taken 319 different pitches deep in his career. He is now tied with Eddie Murray with 504 homers and is tied for 25th on the all time list.
Speaking of the Angles. They seem like a team that is playing well right now and has a chance to keep getting better. Mike Trout will get better, get hot and pick up his club sometime during the season. CJ Wilson had a grind it out CG win over the Rays the other night. The one thing to keep an eye on is the home versus road ERA. At home the Halos have an 4.52 mark, on the road the team ERA drops to sub 3 runs per game.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have gotten off to an awful start this season. Everyone was talking about the Dodgers and they were the team to beat with Arizona as their chief rival. Now as we get closer to Memorial Day weekend the ownership of the club has made a huge move that had everyone in baseball talking. Tony LaRussa is joining the team as the Chief Baseball Officer. By the way he is the only man in the game with that title. This will put pressure on both GM Kevin Towers and skipper Kirk Gibbson. I don’t think Tony wants to go back on the road as a manager any longer and I don’t see him stepping into the GM role for Arizona. He will report directly to the owner and team president Derrick Hall. What will happen with the Dbacks don’t turn things around, no one is sure. One thing for sure is that Tony LaRussa is a serious man and is not there as window dressing. He is going into the Hall of Fame this summer. If things don’t start getting better you will see LaRussa’s fingerprints ripping through this franchise.
